The complete report should be 2200-3000 words, not including the list of references.
The complete report should also cite at least seven sources. At least three of them should
come from peer-reviewed, scholarly journals. As noted above, your sources can also include
interviews. The sources will be integrated into the paper to explain the problem, provide
evidence of the problem, and support the solution.
You might have taken WRTG 393 at UMUC. In WRTG 393, the final paper is a white paper.
This assignment is different from the white paper in WRTG 393. In this paper for WRTG 394,
you are writing to a specific decision-maker about a specific problem in your workplace or
community. The audience is much more focused than that for the white paper in WRTG 393.

In preparation for writing assignment #3, you have identified a problem or need in your
workplace or in your community for which you would like to recommend a solution.
Your next step is to write a proposal memo. The memo is to be read by a decision-maker or
group of decision-makers. This decision-maker or group of decision-makers will approve or turn
down the proposal based on the information in the memo.
For writing assignment #3, you will write the proposal memo. In this proposal memo, you
will seek approval to begin work on this project, which will include an investment of your time
to conduct primary and secondary research.
You goal in writing the memo is to receive formal permission from these decision-makers by
convincing them that, first, there is legitimate problem or need to be addressed and, second, that
there are reasonable recommendations and solutions that make sense for your company or
? The introduction of the memo should clearly state that you are proposing to carry out a
study. The introduction should also make reference to any previous discussions you have
had about your plans with any individuals named in the memo’s header.

this first writing assignment might lead to an excellent topic on which to write your final paper.
For this assignment, you are asked to collect real-life examples of barriers (inhibitors) to
communication that occur in your work or community environment. The examples of
communication barriers that you collect can be from documents, conversations (face-to-face or
digital), email messages, or meetings.
This assignment consists of four parts:
Think about your work or community and come up with 3-4 real-life examples of barriers
(inhibitors) to written and verbal communication that occur in that environment. The
communication examples you come up with can be from documents, conversations (face-to-face
or digital), emails, or meetings.
Then write one or two detailed paragraphs of 100-125 words each in which you describe the

Various types of communication inhibitors, and examples of them, can be found in the four
articles that are available to you through eReserves. These communication barriers include but
are not limited to the following:

audience expectations lack of writing purpose, organization, support or clarity

After you’ve collected at least 3-4 communication barriers and have identified the inhibitors they
represent, define the inhibitors in a bulleted list. The definition you provide should identify the
general characteristics of the inhibitor and how it works to impede communication. The
definitions should not mention your specific work environment.
